Depends on the university - check their website.

Most will give them for families earning between certain thresholds, people from the local area, people doing specific subjects, etc.

You may also be able to get scholarships for music, sport or academic performance (only at some universities).

My son has just been given a bursary from his uni, but he's not sure why. We don't fall into any of those catergories

normally you need to apply for them, i remember for mine i had to apply in my final year of college before easter and the terms were coming to uni from over 45 miles from the main campus and provided i have accepted the uni as my 'firm' choice. did your son apply for such things when he applied for uni last year?

Was his student finance application income assessed?
Universities have bursary polices which mean that if a student has been income assessed for their student finance and are entitled to a HE maintanence grant, the university will also provide a grant to that student.

For example, my university gives a grant to everyone who receives a HE maintanence grant which is equal to at least half of the HE grant.
You don't have to apply specially for these grants. If your student finance application is income assessed and you tick the box which states you are happy for SFE to share information with your university, then the grant will be worked out automatically.

Your son should have received a letter from his university stating what the grant is and when it'll be paid.

I have asked him if he got a letter, but he hasn't replied to me yet.

I recieved a bursary in my first year, along with every one else at my uni who ticked the box on their student finance form. i had a slightly larger one as its income assessed, but even ifu dont fall into catagories for help he may still be entitled for one anyway. and it does not need to be paid back.
