overpayment of tax credit

Hi, my son was getting tax credits for himself and his wage went up last April. He informed them before it went up and on his renewal pack. Even though they had the higher figure they continued to pay him the same until July when his hours were cut to 24 a week. He phoned them and they said that he wasn't entitled to tax credits any more and he had been overpaid. They advised him not to pay it back straight away as there was a chance that his hours would increase later and he would be able to reclaim. My question is when should he pay it back? His hours haven't increased and knows he owes them money. Should he contact them and offer payment or wait for them to send him a letter?

If it was an overpayment that wasn't his fault, i.e he told them and they never amended the claim then is he still liable to pay?
Someone who knows better will be along soon but if he definately told them I'm sure he can appeal the decision. We're going through an appeal at the moment and have had to get specific dates and times of phonecalls and ask for the transcripts of the conversations etc. So I would say from now on keep all info from when you have contacted them, dates times, what was said etc.
A letter will come through asking for payment but I would definately have a look and make sure he does have to pay the money back.Credit Card: £796 Left/£900 October 2011 :eek:Store Card: £100 October 2011
