Hi,
I am asking this on behalf of my daughter who is 23 years old.
She is currently in full time employment but has been accepted on a University course starting in September 2011. She wants to fit in some travelling before starting the course and is planning to leave work in April and travel for a few months, probably arriving back in the UK in July/August.
She intends to look for temporary or part time work to tide her over until she starts her course, but wondered what her entitlement would be to JSA.
Given that she will have left work voluntarily I understand that she would not be entitled to claim for some time, so can she register for JSA before travelling so that her claim is in place for when she gets back or should she just wait until she returns before applying?
Thanks

Sorry, it doesn't work like that.
Couldn't she leave work a month or so later and then come back immediately before she starts university?0 -
She cant register for JSA then go abroad for however meny months as she wont be fulfilling the JSA criteria. IE activly seeking employment0

Yes that would be the logical thing to do but she has already booked flights.
Looks like she will just have to take her chances when she gets back, does anyone know what the qualifying period is for claiming JSA given that she will have left employment voluntarily?
Think I will advise her to talk to the job centre before she sets off on her travels.
Thanks for all the assistance0 -
She will make her claim when she returns and they will then decide on the sanction which can be up to 26 weeks which will start from her making her claim0

She really needs to plan for not receiving any JSA on her return. Leaving a job to travel will almost certainly bring about a sanction of far longer than the 4/8 weeks she has before university starts. Sorry.0
