Hubby has just got an ipod nano 8gb for his birthday. We need a mains charger and i have gone round in circles looking at all the different ones, with good and bad reports. Can anyone suggest a good value, but reliable one? Some of them seem to have gone up in smoke which is very worrying indeed especially if it takes the ipod with it!
Thanks in advance.

Go for one that has a USB outlet rather than a dedicated ipod connector
Then you put the USB cable that came with the ipod but can also charge anything that can be charged from a USB port with the appropiate lead0 -
If you live near one of these stores they do a USB charger with 2 year gurantee for £3.99.

used to do one with a spare ipod usb cable for £4.99 but its been discontinued sadly
EDIT: retrospectively noticed the 'not robust enough for ipod/iphone' tag but might be ok for an ipod nano (particularly the new tiny one), worth looking up the specs0 -
Sadly,Jasx we don't live anywhere near those stores.I was looking to buy online, but then again if i buy from say Argos or Currys i could always take it back if it packed up.Too late if it wrecked the ipod though!
Alan thanks too for your advice . Will talk to hubby tonight.
I know we can charge it via laptop but are still in process of getting songs loaded on to it.What a brilliant piece of kit.The quality is amazing for something so incredibly small. What made us laugh is that the remote control is bigger than the actual ipod!0 -

I think the point being made is those ones provide a low powered USB port so the ipod would simply not charge or take forever to charge as power dribbled into the battery at a pathetic rate....
On the plus side if you do splash out the £££ on an official apple one those have been reported to burst into flames and/or melt too
