Contents Insurance?

Hi
My fiancee and I are currently living with her parents. We have a few high value items (jewelry, tv etc.) that her parents seem reluctant to add to their contents policy.
I was just wondering if I can take out my own contents policy to cover our stuff seperately to theirs. It seems a complete waste of time I know but I might have to consider it.
Cheers

When you say high value, what do you mean? Single article limits are usualy something like £1,500 or £2,000, so only items above these amounts would need to be specified.
What sort of policy do they have- one with a specific sum insured or one with a higher limit of indemnity? Would whatever limit is on the policy absorb your items on top of theirs?
Why are they reluctant? surely you will offer to pay? it won't cost them anything to get a quote. One assumes they have told their home insurer that the occupancy has increased - if this was a question asked at policy inception then they need to advise anyway.
That said, if you really want, you should be able to take out your own policy, but it makes things complicated.0 -
Not too sure of the ins and outs of their policy or weather they have advised that we are living there. A couple of the single items will be in excess of £2000 particularly some jewelry that we want to take to Italy when we get married later in the year.
They are quite set in their ways when it comes to this sort of stuff. They never seem to change or shop around just stick with who they have (they got a Halifax loan at a huge interest rate because they bank there?). I would pay any difference in the policy too so thats not an issue.
We will sit them down and thrash it out with them as we've only mentioned it in passing at this time but I wanted a back up plan and to try and insure jewelry on its own is a pain.0 -
Definatly a good idea to sit down with them and go though it with them - it shouldn't cost too much and you really want to get the jewellery on as personal posessions items before you go away as this is the best way of covering them.
Get them to dig the latest policy details out and check over the sums insured as well as policy limits etc. If they havent shopped arround for years it might be worth having a look arround the market to see if they could save a large amount, even if they cancel the policy mid year.0
