Stupid confusing electricity!

So I moved out of my flat and gave meter readings. The company then say the readings I give are incorrect, so I sent them a photo of the readings, which I'm pretty sure they can't dispute. They said the readings should begin with a 4, but they actually begin with a 2.

I contacted them again today, and the guy I spoke to at Southern Electric said the serial number of that meter did not match the serial number on their records for that flat. So whether it is their mistake with the serial numbers, or the estate agents labelled it wrong, I don't know. They said one possibility is I have been paying the readings from number 26 instead of number 27 where I lived (paid a standing order of £81 per month).

Does this happen often? I dunno what to do or what to expect. I am getting the readings for number 26 and 27 today to pass on to them. As the flat I rented is still empty, the meter reading shouldn't be that different from the day I moved out...unless that meter is attached to another flat which is currently empty lol. Argh I am so confused. And worried I am gonna get slapped with a big bill lol!
