Peugeot 307 problems -where do I start ?

Hi all

Firstly I know some of you are going to come on here and say 'You shouldn't have bought a French car in the first place';) but on the basis that we have and in the main it's been a good little car, we do now need some advice please.

The car is due for it's MOT next month and OH says that some of the faults are MOT failures so we want to try and get them sorted prior to taking it to the garage. OH is a reasonably competent mechanic so hopes to be able to do as much as possible himself.

The problems all really stem back to the electrics (well there's a surpise :rotfl:). The horn doesn't work, the airbag light comes on when you start the engine saying there's a fault and the indicator arm is 'floppy'. OH believes this needs a new 'comms unit'. So question 1 is can you buy reliable second hand unit or is it better to go for new ? Also the doors don't lock, except the back passenger door which will not unlock !!! Any ideas what might be causing this? Finally, he seems to have to replace the bulbs almost every couple of months - is this common practice on 307's or is he just unlucky ?

Any advice anyone can give would be gratefully received.

Thanks

As long as all the bulbs are ok on the day of test the horn maybe the only MOT issue.

Thanks - although I think the replacement of the comms unit is probably the only way to fix the horn ?

Peugeot's electrical problems stem from their conversion to right hand drive, something to do with the way they are rerouted.

My daughter had a 307 and it was an absolute nightmare - very unreliable and always letting her down. I would get rid of it ASAP.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • Take the airbag off and put some solder on the 4 horn connections, that should make the horn contacts better.

You can get 2nd hand Comm 2000 units from ebay. We used to fix them all anyway in the end as it was quite simple. But we never had an arm that was floppy.

Usual fault was the indicators cancelling thru on their own from left to right...

We'd love to but need an MOT first to be able to sell it :(. And it would probably help if the doors didn't make a 'shwuuud' noise when you press the open / lock on the keys - and then not lock :rotfl::rotfl:

tell your other half to put a earth to the steering column , that may fix it . and with the indicator stalk put some sponge round the shaft were it comes out of the cover (both well known faults on 307,s , i should know i have had one and both these fixes fixed my car)

The horn problem is most likey to be a bad earth on the steering wheel. Once the airbag is removed you will see a black wire clipped into a square hole. After removing wire from square hole screw it directly to the steering wheel.

Won't the door not opening be an MOP failure from a safety issue?

Rear doors only have to be securely latched as part of the mot test tho it can be a refusal to test.
