Learning to drive - some help please!
Morning all!
I have decided to take the plunge and learn to drive! Purchased my provisional online on Friday and impatiently awaiting for it to arrive!!! :T
I have been offered to learn from my Uncle for free (he used to be a driving instructor) but we would have to learn in my other half's car (1.7 CDTI Astra) and I found out this morning his insurance wont insure me and some that will are very high (over £5000 from co-op).
My uncle then offered me their spare car but i would have to buy it, and it's only an automatic, where my other half's got a manual.
Does any one know which is better to drive?
Should i go through proper lessons, do an intensive driving course or learn off my uncle - does any one know which is the better option speaking from any past experience?
Thank you very much for your help in advance!

Intensive course normally have a much higher failure rate so unless your in rush I wouldn't bother. If your uncle cars an auto box, your partner insurance cover wont insure you and your uncle want to flog you another car that you don't want then it going to cheapest to get some professional lessons.
Manual is the best. You drive and auto car with manual licence but not a manual with auto licence and you need to experience driving with a manual to pass a test.0 -
Is there not a thread somewhere on here about a company (or companies) that will insure the OP for the OH's car?
Then if there was an accident, it would be the OP claiming their own policy?0 -
http://provisionalinsurance.org.uk/ This is just 1 company at random, shop around, there should be more.0

The main problem is if you learn to drive and subsequently take your test in an automatic you cannot drive a manual car on that licence as far as I am aware so if you are happy in the automatic that's fine but obviously limits your vehicle choice in the future.0

Well not without 'L' plates and under the other terms of a learner.0 -
You'll learn much quicker in an automatic - they're a lot easier to drive than a manual; but as others have said it will restrict you in the future.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0
