wooden windows

I want to replace my windows in my 1930s house and I would prefer to have wooden frames. My windows are bay and large and I was quoted nearly £10.000. any one know any decent companies that give a good deal.

I live in Watford.

It may help if you give us an idea where you are. Someone may have used a company local to you.

Be aware that if you replace the frames, your new windows have to be double glazed with 'k' glass. This is to comply with part L of the building regs. It would be an exception if your house is listed and you are refurbishing. Also, don't only get quotes from window companies. Joiners can also do wooden windows for you.

If the company is not FENSA registered. You will have to apply to your local building inspector. This will cost approx £100 depending where you live. They have to come out once the windows are finished and check that the glass is indeed correct.

  • I agree with Rex, forget the Window Companies. If you're going for timber you need an old established joiner who'll make the frames for you out of some quality timber. Ask around, check yellow pages. Call at their workshops and see what they make. I don't live in your area but I know a few quality guys round here. Guys who do all the quality work in our listed buildings. Check with your Local Authority Building Maintenance department ask who they use on their Public Buildings.

Most windows are a standard size and, unless things have changed, you always used to be able to buy standard wooden window frames 'off the shelf' from builders merchant type places.

The £100 government inspection rip-off aspect make me so angry. It's just another stealth tax. Then if you go to a FENSA member they will save you the £100 but charge you £000's extra in other ways, to more than make up for it.

I remembered this thread when I visited Wickes yesterday. I picked up a leaflet of theirs headed 'Wickes softwood wooden window frames'.

They list all the standard sizes they do and the leaflet has loads of tips and guidance.

I bought my windows from Wickes 6 yearsa go, they are softwood frames but "double dipped" to give a longer life (not sure what this means, could be a rip off for all I know?) Most of my windows aren't standard size & they made them to order. I then just got a local builder to fit them for me.

You can get timber windows from all good Builders Merchants. They normally stock windows by John Carr/Boulton and Paul who are now owned by Jeld-Wen

    look here for info:

For other companies search on here:

WTG on wanting wooden windows! I hate plasticky ones but half the houses in my road (only 1980s for goodness's sake) have had their original hardwood windows replaced with tacky plastic ones.

Fortunately our previous occupiers upgraded from standard to double glazed units when they bought the house new, so we have the best of both worlds ... although a high failure rate on the (now 22 years old) sealed units. But they are only about £40 each to replace - so how big a deal is that compared to the cost of new plastic glazing?

Try your local Jewson or Magnet. They can make made to measure windows from stock type models. It will be expensive in most cases anyway. There's a lot of work in a window.
