No claims discount?

I have been with my present insurer (NFU) for 11 years and not made a claim.

Prior to that I have had my vehicles insured with various insurers for 20 years without ever making a claim.

I would therefore reasonably expect to be able to satisfy any insurers requirements regarding their maximum no claims discount requirement. 31 years without a claim.

I have just received my renewal from NFU for £630 (£356 last year) but my renewal notes my no claims discount entitlement as "6 years or more".

I have been searching for a better quote but insurance companies vary regarding their no claims discount requirements. Some are asking for 9 years.

Please can anyone advise if there is any requirement for NFU to at least confirm I have had no claims while I have been insured with them. (11 years).

Thanks

Mike

Ring them up and ask if they will send you a letter to that effect. I'm sure they will.

Going in to the local office today. Just wondering if they were obliged to forward the information OR whether I am asking for a favour.

I would say the former. It's your no claims discount. The worst that could happen is that they might make you wait until your policy expires. I would make sure you have nailed down a better alternative policy with adequate cover before you go wading in.

    Thanks.

    Peculiar situation with the NFU.

Up until 3 years ago they did not indicate the no claims discount entitlement on the renewal. 3 years ago I received a renewal that said "5 years". I went into the office to discuss as patently I had 8 years with them at that stage as well as the previous 20. They said they had changed their system and only need to record 5 years.

As far as I can see worst case scenario is that when they changed their system they ditched all records older than 5 years?

I do have ALL paperwork, original proposal, renewals etc relating to the 11 years with them.

I understand insurance companies should be free to apply their own terms & conditions as well as rates but feel it would be useful if all insurance companies worked to the same guide lines regarding this issue.

I should add I have not yet got a problem. Will know later today.

I have lined up a new quote for £307 with £20 cash back but this is dependent upon 9 years NCD.

NFU will issue letter confirming my 11 years claim free with them but only after I have not renewed with them.

That will be in case you are involved in circumstances that might lead to a claim before renewal date, in which case your bonus would reduce substantially unless you have protected NCD. Always worth paying a little extra in my view as you may find that your bonus goes down to the equivalent of 40%.
