Change of PC -does it affect internet connection

My old dad has virgin broadband on an old PC. I intend to give him a more modern PC. How would the change of PC affect his broadband operation ? Is it simply unplug the lead from router to the old base unit and reconnect to the "new" base unit port ?

Is there anything else I would need to do ?

Just connect the new pc up, Plug the ethernet cable in to the new pc. DHCP will then connect to the router.

Should be as easy as that.
  • Its very often just plug and go straight away. Even if its not, its still incredibly easy to get your PC to connect to the Internet. Nothing will need doing to your router or broadband at all.

Usually all computer motherboards use drivers to connect to the Internet. If you bought/get the new computer from a shop/store don't worry it will come automatically with the driver Installed. Drivers are usually not installed when somebody re-formats their hardrive and re-installs windows. All you simply have to do to install a driver is use a different computer and go to the motherboards website for example ASUS and find the driver for your motherboard. Download it, move it over to the new PC and Click and install the driver.

But as you said it very often is just "simply unplug the lead from router to the old base unit and reconnect to the "new" base unit port"

if its a plain ethernet cable yes just swap it over, any problems will be down to trivial things like 'have you disabled the port on the new computer, if so re-enable it' kind of thing.

If its a USB internet modem the above won;t work but those things are so old your best bet would be to throw it away and insist your ISP give you a new (free) one
