    This NOT a wind up.

When I bought this house in 1982, it was with a mortage from the Property Owners building society, they were in turn taken over by the Woolwich. In 2001, I decided to pay off the mortgage in full, so popped into the local Woolwwich branch and handed them a cheque. Whilst in the Woolwich, I was asked did I want my
Deeds sending to me, or would I like them to store them for an annual fee of £15. I said "I would like them to keep them safe and would pay the £15". I also asked for them to send me a copy of the deeds they were storing for me. When they arrived I noticed my name wasn't on them.

Call me nieve, but I thought the name are you talking about a Land Registry registered title, as no lender could even register a mortgage in your name against a property in someone else's name......so you are still confusing......or do you have unregistered deeds, and there is no copy of the conveyance to you in 1982 with them - but your lawyer back in 2002 may well have their file and they would have spotted the fact that a deed was missing would be changed by the building society because I had paid the mortgage off in full.

Now the Woolwich has been taken over by Barclay's.

The solictor who originally delt with the sale is no longer in business in the town as I think he may have retired. yes but what about the 2002 mortgage

Please help, this is the only house I've ever bought and I'm getting worried about this, what SHOULD I do to resolve this matter and safegaurd my wife's entitlement to the property after my death.

it all sounds fishy it really does

I bought a property 2 years ago & my solicitor told me that Title Deeds were no longer necessary he was wrong as 'deeds' have taken on a wider meaning and include planning consents, new build warranties, guarantees, Transfers referred to in the registered title, copy lease, management company share certificate etc - lose them and duplicates can cost and so waste your hard earned money .

herm i hear that a lot from some 'conveyancers'

  • Can't really take this any further without more information from OP (original poster)as what he says does seem inconsistent - as TimmyT and others have pointed out.

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.
