Washing machine constantly pumping not filling? (Hotpoint BWD129)

I have a hotpoint bwd129. When i put it on a wash the water flows into the soap tray no problem. Then everything stops. Around 5 minutes pass. Then the pump starts pumping out water, and continues for about another 5 mins even though there is no water left in the machine. After about 10 mins it starts to pump again. The light display remains on 'wash' and the door locked display remains lit. I have checked the inlet hoses and the waste hose and all seem ok. I have raised the waste hose to the correct height.
ANyone got any ideas before I have to call someone out?
Thanks

Does the drum turn at all whilst it is on? If not, will it turn by hand when you open the door? Any grating noises as it turns?
My guess is that if the drum doesn't turn under power but is fine turning by hand, you might be worth checking the brushes on the motor. These are made of carbon (think pencil lead) and gradually wear down until they no longer make a connection, at which point the motor no longer works. If it is these, on most machines its a few quid for new ones and a fiddly but not particularly expert job to change them. I did mine for £15 (and they were expensive because I got them from a local spares dealer rather than online - but then I got them there and then!).
If you google "change washing machines brushes" you'll find plenty of machine specific advice, spares and even videos showing you how to do it.
If the drum grates as it turns, its possibly the bearings going, if it won't turn its possibly something stuck between the inner and outer drum like a bra wire or coin.
Hope that helps.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
possibly a control problem. ie try the water level sensor. sometimes like a thin tube with bellows device on the end.
remove the tube and blow down it.
worst case, it could be the pcb.Get some gorm.0 -
Thank you both. Thr drum occansionally does a couple of rotations. No odd noise. SO I don't think it's the brushes.
Any advice on locating that tube? Sounds like it has potential...0 -
If it does the occasional couple of revolutions ..it's my guess that its the heating element ....i state again ..its a guess .
it generally goes thorough the whole program and does nothing when one of these has gone ....as it's waiting for the temperature transmitter to tell it that its reached the right temperature before it starts washing.
Place your hand over the glass and feel it after 5 Min's or so, to see if its getting warm ..
The couple of Revolutions is in the prog to stir the water up and get it to an even temperature before the wash starts ..
The pump, start and stop business is to do with the fact that normally the machine would be pumping out whilst spinning ..so yours pumps out ...without spinning ..then washing continues to drip ..so activating water level sensor later.
BTW ..lot of people are unhappy with these washers ..in review sites on the net ..they seem to have a lot of problems ..a lot of different problems too.,.which is often the case with combined washer dryers ...this one being more troublesum than most ..so it seems.
Buy separate, Washer and dryer, is what i say ..or you're inviting trouble due to the complexities of having both functions in one machine.

Could be a blockage in the pump. Have you cleaned the filter?0
