Connecting PS3 + Sound system to TV

HI all I have just bought a new surround sound system my first ever.

Having some trouble getting it to work though.

I have connected both the PS3 and the Home Theatre to the TV via HDMI, then I have connected the PS3 to the Home Theatre via Optical cable.

However the TV and PS3 sound is still playing via tv. any ideas?

Sound and video out from the PS3 are both going direct to the TV via HDMI. Does your home theatre receiver have HDMI in? You would normally route the PS3 video and audio through that.

No it doesn't have HDMI in just HDMI out and optical in and component

You need to go into the Sounds Settings on the PS3 and set the output to optical and not HDMI. TV sound will still play through the TV speakers unless you mute it or turn the volume to zero.

In which case you need to go into your PS3 audio set up and disable HDMI out (or auto) as by default it will pick the best option itself. You will then need to select optical out.

Have you tried switching the PS3 optical audio out between bitstream and pcm/

I've tried:

PS3 HDMI out to TV HDMI in + Home Theatre HDMI Out to TV HDMI In + PS3 Optical Out to Home Theatre Optical In

PS3 HDMI out to TV HDMI in + Home Theatre HDMI Out to TV HDMI in + TV Optical out to Home Theatre Optical In.
