    The hard disk could be faulty, whether caused by heat or something else - if it's failed a pc shop isn't going to know for sure either way, so heat related is a plausible explanation if there are other heat related issues.

    If you want to find out for yourself you can either use a 2.5" usb disk caddy or if you have the original machine, a bootable cd with disk checking software (hd manufacturers site), assuming the disk is spinning and visible to the machine/caddy.
