Combi Boiler Replacement

Hi there,

I need to get my old combi boiler replaced as it is causing a load of issues recently especially with our shower. Just had npower in to quote for simple replacement (no new rads no power flush as he says its not required due to closed system) and new pipes. he is quoting around £3100. I personally think this is crazy expensive. What are you opinions on how much this sort of thing should cost? I am v.scared about so called "cowboy" builders and who actaully installs my boiler. Just because someone is gas safe registered..what does that mean?

Thanks

Chris

Best bet would be to get recommendations for a local gas safe engineer to install your new boiler, ask the neighbours/ friends.
Your local authority may have a trusted tradesperson scheme.

Boilers cost around £800, so the rest is labour.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

so this does sound v.expensive though yea??

    & Fittings
    & Pipe
& System Flushing Chemicals (this will more than likely be the very minimum to ensure the warranty is valid)
    & Inhibitor
& An electrician to wire boiler (should one be needed)
& The installer will pass on some of the cost of getting gas safe registered to the customer

So saying the boiler is £800 and the rest labour is a bit misleading.

Then there is the possibility the old boiler is balanced flue as opposed to fan flue,so will have a big 12" square flue hole as opposed to a 4" circular hole, that will need bricking up before the new boiler can go on the wall. Then the new hole will need forming which if the installer hasn't got their own core drill this will need to be hired, and cost passed on to customer.

And the new boiler will be condensing boiler so this will need a waste pipe of some sort routed to the boiler...

The gas pipe feeding the boiler may need enlarging to provide enough gas for the new boiler....

There may not be a room stat or TRV's fitted which should be fitted to bring the system up to current standards...

    Is that enough :o

Indeed the price quoted may be a bit high, but without knowing the whole job its hard to say, that is why you get a couple of quotes to compare the prices in your area.

When you mention the shower problems are you sure it's not the shower itself? The reason I ask is that I had a problem with the boiler turning itself on and off when the shower was used and I assumed it was a fault on the boiler. After much research and advice on here it seems the fault was with the shower itself!
