The £2080 conundrum continues

HEY
so long story short dwp deposited £2080 in my bank account last week after numerous phone calls today i can confirm it is not from tax credits, it is not from income suppot or job seekers. so i rang the in work credit guys who say they have no record of any payments coming to me either, not since dec 09. and as i have just put a new claim in it would show on my file if i had been paid anything. they gave me the direct number for their pay department who also confimed they couldnt find anything and i should call the in work credit people again to get them to re check my file. they did and again nothing.....
i rang the loan parent department and asked them if they could help and they said i would need to speak direct to the in work credit people. i decided against it as they couldnt come up with anything before they would be unlikely to come up with something a 3rd time.
so after calling everyone neccesary is there a reccomendation on what to do now ?
ive recived no letters regarding this payment so cannot check if they are correct/incorrect.
the woman i spoke to in the pay department said i have done all i can regarding this is i am unaware of which department made the payment and i should sit back and wait if i hear anything. she also said that it would be unlikely i would recieve the full years payment from them as they pay on a weekly basis rather than a yearly. there system apparently cant make mistakes like this as each payment has to be authorised thru seeing my wage slips to prove i am still in work on a quartly basis. so to recive such a payment from them would be very unusual and would have been flagged up immediately.
thanks

unless you get written confirmation that the money was supposed to be paid to you..........dont touch it!!
ut could take weeks, months or even years, but if you werent meant to have this money they will realise eventually and demand it back.
put it in an interest bearing account and forget about it til they either tell you what its for or demand it back.0 -
I agree. You are sure its a mistake so put it into a savings account and leave it there (unless of course, this pushes you over the savings limits for any other benefits you may claim!) and wait for the paperwork that will hopefully arrive.0

What was the payment reference (xx out any personal details)?Gone ... or have I?0

That happened to me once, got a £400 payment, no one had any record of it and it's been 2 years now.0

Don't spend it!
If you have informed everyone you can think of then just wait.
It maybe a wrong BACS transfer, don't spend it.

As you know it's from the DWP and you know it's not legally your money, it would be foolish to start spending it now.
As others have said, put it into a high interest savings account and wait for them to ask for it back.
It must be very tempting to spend it, but it really isn't yours to spend. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -
Maybe they had the wrong account number or they input the number wrong and the person it belongs to is phoning them saying "Where is my cash?" and they are saying "We paid it last week" If it donesn't show anywhere as being paid to to you it is probably not yours.0

case solved ! they called today to say it was down to a member of staff entering jan 2010 instead of jan 2011. they are still unsure of how the system allowed a payment so large to go out and not be flagged. anyway they have sorted my in work credit correctly and will be back paying me but in the mean time they have left me with the £2080 and will contact me to arrange paying it back. they cant figure out how they will do it tho as the system only chases overpayments and this apparently isnt an overpayment ?
makes me laugh lol.
surely its as simple as them giving me an account number and me depositing it in that account eh.....
oh well for a while there i was richer than ive ever been
they also were very thankful that i disclosed this information to them as according to them everything was fine and they probably wouldnt have spotted this error. they now have the task of checking all the records for other date errors haha.
wonder how many other people have had a surprise payment ?
but thank you guys for your help and suggestions regarding this matter.0 -

Although tempting aren't you glad you didn't touch it.0
