Credit card - spotting fraud

Why can't I see transactions on my credit card in my online statement more or less as they happen as I can with my debit card?
After my card details were compromised recently I cancelled the cards and looked at my bank statements online to check none of the transactions were fraudulent.
For my debit card I could check my current account and spotted and challenged a fraudulent transaction immediately but I found that I can't do an online/realtime check of payments made using my credit card.
Both cards were originally my bank's "own brand" and then they morphed into Visa cards a couple of years back.
I seem to have no way of checking and rejecting any fraudulent transactions on my credit card immediately - only when I get the monthly paper statement will I be able to check for and challenge any fraud.
Will that make any difference to getting any fraudulent payments refunded from Visa?
Should I be telling Visa [?barclaycard] that my credit card details have been compromised or is it enough to tell my bank - they issued the card.

Can you not call the CC companies and ask them to check the most recent transactions?

I think the answer is that you (or your bank) can't guarantee that you are going to be able to see transactions on either your credit or debit card straight away. Certain banks MAY adjust the available balance if they become aware of a pending transaction via the authorisation process, but not all transactions are authorised (at least not by the bank) and if not it's usually going to be at least 24-48 hours before the transaction details make their way to the card issuing bank to update your balance.

Here's a thread I responded to earlier describing the process that your transaction has to go through....

You need to deal with your bank directly, rather than Visa. If you're with Barclays, I think you will need to tell Barclays and Barclaycard separately. I'd be calling them both and letting them know what has happened.

My transactions appear instantly as Pending with Capital One online. However transactions take 2 days to appear on my other credit cards with the Haifax and Nationwide.
