New Carpets......

I am pretty peeved right now, I've just forked out for brand new carpets all over the house. I specifically asked for silver rails to divide the carpets in each room as there is old knackered bits of wood there. Anyway they ahve just finished laying upstairs so I have moved up there while they do the down stairs and I have found that they have just left the old bits of wood and not put the rail thingys in - Im fuming! I don't think it's the fitters fault, I think its the shop so I son't want to go off on them - I paid to have those damn rails in, anyone now where I stand?

Providing you have the order for the rails documented just phone up the shop and ask them when they are coming to fit them.

If it was just a verbal agreement that is not documented you may have more of a problem.

You mean the door bars? Does the paperwork shows for them to be included? or did they miss this off? I would get onto them. It sounds like the shop did not note it down otherwise I am guessing the fitters would have done it (although I think they could have used their initiative and asked you if you needed them done - even if they thought it wasn't previously agreed and had to cost you separately for them). My husband is a fitter and I think he would question if someone was paying alot of money for nice new carpets and it didn't say to replace the tatty old wooden ones.

Thank you, they should be on the invoice, Im certain I saw her right them down, worse though it's not just a case of the coming out and putting them in. The planks of wood are quite wide and they have cut the carpet to go around them - I suspect they would have to fit all new carpets - which is not a good thing, the ones I have are less then an hour old. Perhaps I'll just have to paint the wood or something, not very happy at all though!

If they would need to completely relay the carpet then I'd suggest that you give them the option of replacing the old wood with something acceptable - hardwood maybe (if this is not absurdly expensive).

A houseful of carpets is a major investment and they should not be allowed to get away with disappointing you to this extent.

Conversely, as it's almost certainly a genuine mistake, it would be best if you could be flexible in allowing them some leeway in rectifying the situation.

A few replacement thresholds in a suitably sized piece of oak or similar hardwood should cost no more than £5 or so for the material plus about a hour or so each to fit. A bit of oil before they're fitted and they should look pretty smart.

It's disappointing that the carpet fitters and the carpet shop haven't communicated properly but you might actually prefer the look of a wooden threshold if they make a good job of it.

If they do it properly, when they screw the new threshold to the floor they should plug the screw holes with more of the same wood, to hide the holes.

    Good luck.
