Has anyone come across this problem before, the clothes (sometimes not always) come out of the machine smelling "musty" (is the best description I can think of) we've tried different detergents and the inside of the washer smells ok. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello Gary_zero
Welcome to the MSE site.
I never have this problem but I do use a measuring cup to add the correct amount of powder for each wash load. I also keep both the powder dispenser drawer and the machine door slightly ajar when it's not in use, to encourage air flow and discourage a musty smell and mould developing.
Have you checked/cleaned the filter recently?
If you're already doing all of these things.............I give up.:o
Hopefully someone (better qualified) will give you better advice.
Regards

Hi Gary_zero
Welcome to MSE.
After reading tips on this site, I run my washing machine on an empty hot wash, with a mug of vinegar instead of washing powder in the drawer. I do this once a month - I generally choose the first day of the month so I know it's done. I also do this with my dishwasher.

I may sound like a complete turnip head - but is this fish & chip vinegar, or the white vinegar that has so many other uses?0

I use the white vinegar - I get it from Asda.

We used to have this problem !! Towels + cottons used to be the worst smelling !!
We eventually found out that it was the liqui-tabs we were using - we switched to Daz powder with a measuring cup !!
We found out we were not using enough powder due to our hard water !!0 -
I have been told by a washing machine engineer, to do a service wash once a month, which is to use ariel powder on the hottest wash ( empty drum or chuck in some teatowels) as it contains bleach to kill any mould growing down inside the machine. He said the liquid cleaners just produce gloop which starts smelling foul after a while. Also, remove the soap dispenser drawer once a month and clean it out, it goes without saying, you wouldnt put your dinner on a dirty plate, with rotting food on it, so clean the drawer and the bit above it in the machine too, as it can get black with mould. Wipe the rubber door seal dry and leave the door open slightly to completely air. Hope this helps. And yes the lady in the avatar is me
