BT equipment rental service charge

Hi, my current home telephone & broadband service provider is pipex/ homecall. I pay £30 monthly which includes line rental,1mb broadband, free calls local & national.

My telephone was provided by BT in 1997, it has large buttons and other features that are usefull for people with disabilities as my wife had a serious illness that left her with very little vision. I currently pay £3.25 per quarter rental for this phone which is a waste as phones are very cheap to buy outright nowadays.

Question is how do i go about cancelling this equipment rental now that BT is not my service provider, do i offer to buy the phone or have to carry on renting it from BT?

Thank you.

If you pay your line rental to Homecall, how are BT billing you for it, as you are no longer a customer.

All you need to do is tell whoever is billing you for it that you dont want it anymore. They will cease billing you for it ,and probaly send you a jiffy bag to return it.
  • Thanks for the reply. I dont pay line rental to BT as part of my homecall package includes the line rental. The only money i pay to BT is for the equipment rental.

  • just call 0800 800 150. they will cancel the item and let you keep it, as you've rented i that long.

What a tight bunch they are. We all know they'll bin it as soon as they receive it.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I think you've been mis-informed. As i said above, they should have told you to keep it. BT no longer require that customers send back rented equipment, as long as its out of term. Out of term items, are items over 18 months old. You won't receive any package, as the ware house will not send it, as you're item is not in term.

I've worked for BT many years, and know the correct policy.
