I have a Google calendar I wish to share with a group for collaboration.

I can do this easily enough by adding email addresses to the shared list. The problem with this is

1. Everyone must have a Google account and some may not want to do this.
2. The list will need maintaining.

An alternative solution would be to set up a single shared Google account to which everyone has access. I realise that this would be open to potential abuse but I feel the risk would be minimal as the group are trusted, responsible adults and any such possible abuse would not be serious.

Have I overlooked anything? Would anyone advise not to go this route? Is there a third way?

You can use an existing e-mail address to sign up for google docs (I use my hotmail account). Yes, people will have to register but it should be straightforward and I really don't think people would have a problem.

The advantage of using google docs is that, along with a shared calendar, you can also host shared documents on there to collaborate on.

Yep, open up a free Google Apps account, and you can add up to 50 users who can all collaborate on a shared calendar and on docs.
