Confusion over amount for Working Tax Credit

Hello, I am a bit confused over an Amended Tax Credit Award that I have just received.
From the beginning of the current Tax Year until the 3rd Jan 2011 I was unemployed. My wife is working in a part time job. My total income for that period was £839 (benefits). My wife's was predicted to be until the end of the financial year £6427. Our Tax Credit Award stated amount reduced by due to income as £325.
On 4th Jan I started a part time job. My esitmated earnings for this job for this financial year is £1779; so with the benefits as mentioned above, total for this financial year £2618.
My income has now increased by £1779 as mentioned. Our redcution due to income has gone from £325 to £1068. They have taken away 40% of our increase. Ihave phoned them and they have said they cannot explain to me how this calculation is done and have to accept and assume it is correct.
Any suggestions please?
