Council Tax/Benefit Query

I am moving to a private rent shortly and wondered if anyone could advise how council tax works.

Will the council tax run from the date I move in or will I also be liable for the amount when the property was empty?

Do I just have to give them a moving in date and it will work from that date?

Also as a single mum on IS, CTC and CB will I be entitled to CTB? If so does anyone know or have a link as to roughly how much?

Thanks in advance :)

There is a hierarchy of liability for council tax which most councils publish on their website but it is also available on the citizens advice bureau. It is usually the tenants responsibility when they stay there and the owners during void periods when it isn't occupied.

Put your information into the Turn2us website which will calculate your council tax benefit.

You will not be liable for any council tax if you are not working. That is waived if you are on full housing benefit. are you claiming Housing benefit?. As far as i am aware you can still work and get help with council tax etc. That very much depends on the hours you work and the amount you earn. For instance if you work part-time say for 8 hurs a week at minimum wage, you would probably qualify., whereas if you worked 30 + hours and earn't say £10 an hour you may not. Best bet is to as the other poster said try the entitled to website's benefits checker and it should give you a rough idea.

@Orville - yes will be on full LHA rate when I move (already confirmed) currently on full HB in a temporary property.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

You will not be liable for any council tax if you are not working.
The OP will be liable for council tax from the start date of her tenancy. She will remain liable even if she claims council tax benefit - the council tax benefit may pay her charge in full but she remains the liable person ( CTB can only be paid to the liable person - don't confuse liability with the amount of council tax to be paid.)

If you dont move in at the start of the tenancy then you can claim a Class C exemption until you do move in, if the property is unfurnished, or a reduction if the property is furnished.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
