Moving home and unsure what to do...

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I will be moving home soon and want to try and find the best deal for my gas and electricity but I'm not sure how to go about this as I've never done it before.

We will be moving from pre-payment metres with Scottish Power to a monthly direct debit (although I'm not sure who the new supplier is yet).

However, what I'd like to know is will I be able to change suppliers soon after moving in if I find a better deal or will I have to wait for a certain amount of time?

To find the best deal for you, use a comparison site.

As soon as you have registered with the existing supplier(s) you can apply to switch supplier.

    Hi

I had a similar dilemma when I moved home. I contacted our suppliers at the time (Scottish and Southern) who said that they were unable to "transfer" the service and that I would need to take the supply from whoever was supplying the new property.

This turned out to be NPower who I rang when I moved in, gave meter reads etc.., and negotiated a tariff (it would be helpful if you know your current annual usage for this).

It was at this point, knowing my new supplier and the tariff I was on, that I could start running comparisons with other suppliers. Happily, NPower are the cheapest for my area so I didn't need to switch.

In summary - contact new provider, give reads, negotiate tariff, then compare prices.

Alternatively, if you know your usage and the postcode of the property you are moving into, there's no harm in running the details through some comparison websites to get a feel of who is the cheapest for the area.
