I would say 18 months is a bit early. 3 seems to be about the right age, although he may like watching you play with it. I had one of these a few years back for my 8 year old, he was 3 at the time. He loved it, even though he didn't understand the alphabet at the time he soon got the hang of it. It's strong, the kids can put the games in themself. By 3 year old plays with his brothers DS and Wii but doesn't understand that he has to be careful with it and the discs. This is much better to start with than those.
