What happens for money when child starts Uni?

Morning all, son is due to leave 6th year in summer and hopes to get into a Uni (not a Further Education College). I'm current getting Family & Work Tax Credits as I currently work part time but I'm on a low income. I've phoned and been told the benefits stop when he leaves school and I'm worried my income will fall significantly. Would I be entitled to anything else after he leaves school or is the onus on me (nearly 60) to find full time employment? Thanks.

I would hazard that the onus is on the parents, does he not have any relationship with the father?

Sadly, we see a lot of parents with care who get in financial difficulties when their children reach school leaving age.

You need to be working 30 hours a week to claim WTC as an adult without children. Even if junior is living at home, you can get the single person's CT allowance.

IS you son going to live at home or away?

When your son goes to university he will be fully funded with loans, grants and bursaries because you're on a low income. This will mean that you don't need to keep him while he's studying if he's away from home or he will have enough money to pay for his keep if he goes to a local university.

Either of these will go a long way towards balancing out with your drop in benefits.

Sadly his father has passed away a long time ago.

Oh well, just have to tighten our belts. I will endeavour to find more work but at my age (apart from B & Q !) I can't see it being easy.

    Thanks for all replies.

Your son should be able to contribute towards the household purse by finding part-time employment during term-time and full time employment during the holidays. If he's not living at home, you will experience a reduction in costs anyway.
