After seeing so many courier woes in this forum, I thought I'd pass on my satisfaction with SilverSprint's economy service.

The Economy service is ideal if you're in no rush. Once a week, one or more vans does a loop of the country doing pickups and dropoffs along the way. The route(s) are planned the week before, based on the business booked in. It is the same sort of price as those reverse bidding courier sites, but waaaay less stressful, you know the goods are cared for, insured en route, etc. And you arrange windows by consent - but you're looking at M-F 9-5 ish for the economy service.

I've used them for 4 sets of items now, all awkward shapes and sizes. They always pickup and drop off in the 2hr window you agree with them over the phone the week before. They have a wrapping service for goods in transit, and are generally pleasant to deal with. It means you can get those 'collection only' bargains you see on ebay that nobody bids for because they can't collect across the country. I got a modern vending machine I've fixed up for a quid. Broadcast kit (bulky) for 99p. A coin-op massage chair (the really powerful ones, not the girly home ones) for £50. Each item I've paid more for couriering than the item cost, and even then I've got bargains!

So next time you're here to bemoan a courier, try SilverSprint. In fairness, their web forms are a bit boring to fill in and poorly designed (you have to retype everything each time), but Matt on the phones couldn't be more friendly or helpful. At least ask them to quote!
