    If you did want a trip to Stirling (Castle - a smaller version of Edinburgh, Wallace Monument, etc) then ScotRail has a Kids Go Free promotion with off-peak Day Return tickets (travel after 9.15). Depending on how many people, it can be cheaper than using a Family Railcard.

    You could break your journey at Linlithgow for the Palace

    If you get a Historic Scotland 3-day Explorer pass that costs about the same as Edinburgh+Stirling Castles, so anything else HS is effectively free. I think the Wallace Mont has a free kids' admission with the Kids Go Free train tickets as well.
    A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
