Dell MFP 1600n Has Stopped Printing, Need Advice

I'd appreciate some advice about a problem I'm having with my Dell MFP 1600n printer.

The last print job was successful but today it refused to print. When I go to print within seconds of pressing 'print' I get the message 'error – printing.'

To date I've un-installed and then re-installed the printer. I've turned the computer and printer off at the mains, disconnected the cable between the printer and my router and then re-connected. I've also tried a different cable just in case the one I was using was faulty – all to no avail. I've also tried to use Microsoft's Fix It (my operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium).

The printer is selected in my Home Group preferences.

In devices and printers it shows that the Dell 1600n is set as the default printer and that the printer is ready.

The print queue has been checked and there is no blockage there. I connect to it via LAN and wireless, there should be no bother there because as I mentioned above the printer was working fine about two weeks back; I only use it about once or twice a month. I've also tried to connect to the printer directly from my laptop ie connecting the network cable directly from my printer to my laptop – but again no print. I've also carried out a systems restore to a point before my last known print job.

The only thing that I can possibly think of that is different is that a few weeks back I replaced my modem router other than that I can't think of anything else that has changed. Can't recall if I printed anything since the new modem was installed.

Any suggestions or help appreciated.

  • Hi Kevin, you said " I've also tried to connect to the printer directly from my laptop ie connecting the network cable directly from my printer to my laptop – but again no print." that will not work, the only way you can connect to the lappy directly is via USB not network cable, unless using a crossover cable.

Can you ping the printer from your PC/Laptop ? If you have a USB cable try checking the printer's IP settings, or if you have a manual, see if you can print the settings using printer buttons. I am not familar or familiar even with Dell printers so I can't give specific help, sorry.

  • Another idea I guess it's a MFP can you scan from the it to either of the PC's?

debitcardmayhem thanks for the reply. If I try it with the usb cable it prints.

I've just noticed that when I go to print via wireless - click print, the print box comes up it gives status as been offline.

When I first connected the usb cable it started searching for drivers and came up with four two of which were for the Dell 1600n printer it installed one but not the other the other two drivers install correctly. Still can't print over my LAN or wirelessly

    Any suggestions.

Managed to get up and running again.

Went to my router and found an IP address for attached items (it had to be the printer as it's the only thing attached) set up a new TCP/IP port in printer properties and gave it the address from the router and all seems to be working.

Again debitcardmayhem thanks for the initial thoughts on how to tackle the problem
