Unfotunately as a 'newbie' I cannot post any links ect. If you go to; www. adviceguide. org.uk /index/ c_secondhand_cars. pdf (there are no spaces, I have had to post it like that to avoid the link) it has all the info you need including the term 'assumed'.

It also says "and it is reasonable for the car to have lasted for that time"
Used cars are expected to develop faults

It also says "unless the dealer can show otherwise"
    which is what I said.

Under normal circumstances the OP would have no chance - because the car would have been fine for 5 months then suddenly develop a fault. The only thing that saves the OP if they act very fast is that they claim not to have driven the car at all in these 5 months, if they can prove that, they may have a chance.
