  • Many thanks for all the replies and info!

Think we are going to go in September now to make sure the Tioga Pass is open.

Hi - We're thinking of doing the West Coast thing in September (have we left it too late?) but fallen at the first hurdle: one-way flight prices. We waould like to fly into Phoenix and out of San Fransisco (or vice-versa). A return ticket to either is about £550 but a one-way to Phoenix is around £900! What to do. Also, we would need to pick up a rental car at one end and drop it off at the other - probably no problem on that score....or is there a premium fro this facility. Any help whatsoever is much appreciated.

    Thanks - Martin

An open jaw ticket is what you want. Flying into one city and out a different one. When you are looking at flights with the various airline companies, click the box that usually says something like "multi city"

I put a couple of random September dates into Kayak and £553 popped up (LHR -PHX and then SFO-LHR), so you will get flights for a decent price.

Rental cars - There are no drop off fees between California and Nevada (if you know what you are doing), but I can't remember about Arizona and California. (It's been a few years since we last flew into PHX)

Just checked and there are rental companies that do not charge a one way drop off fee between Arizona and California.

Virgin open jaw into phoenix and back from San Fran £692 on VA 3rd-17th Sept.

Dollar don't charge one way fees between Cal-Nev-Ari but check conditions on individual sites, some charge by distance and I've found some will charge $100 to ipck up in SFO and drop off in LA.

No they don't the flight is into SFO but they do include the internal flight to Phoenix. Phoenix as a destination is on their pull down destination menu.

Do you mind if I ask where you got that information about Dollar and one way fees - I'm looking to do Vegas to San Diego, so want to be sure before booking with them

Also read bad reviews about them adding on extras that you never asked for - anyone had any experience of using Dollar?

If you book through http://www.usrentacar.co.uk/one_way_car_rental.aspx there won't be any extra drop off fees. I called them to confirm this as using dollar direct will charge.
