Does anyone know of the best used MPG cars that are also cheap to insure.

1. Has to be at least a 1.2L
2. Has to be under £3k of value
3. Has to in insurance group one or two (what ever that means)
4. Has to do at least 50 MPG

Please also advise me on tips to get cheap insurance... (I'm 21)
Thanks :)

Going to say exactly the same thing - I have the 100bhp version and despite a mixed diet of sitting in traffic jams and long distance high speed runs it still returns the 60mpg consistently.

The only problems I've had with it are a leaking sunroof which costs too much to fix and the recent month of snow finally destroyed the brake discs after 70000 miles - but at under £400 for all 4 replaced I don't suppose I can complain

I concur with the Clio 1.5 DCi.

Have owned two of them, and for my average urban commute, I also returned 60mpg.

The Megane from 2004 also comes with the 1.5 DCi, and £30/year road tax, if you needed something a bit bigger ,though the Insurance group may be a bit higher. My dad has one of these and returns a similar average mpg (high 50's - 60mpg).

There will be peopel who advise against Renaults, but I had none of the usual faults on mine.

Though I did have major oil burning issues on a 2004 1.5 DCi Scenic.

I was going to say a Volkswagen Lupo diesel, which will easily top 50mpg, however that's insurance group 3.

However they are much cheaper than £3k.

    Here I go again :)

Fiat Panda 1.2 petrol will get you close to 50mpg with care. You also have the 1.3 diesel. You won't find a bad review about this great wee car.

Is the Renault in group 1 or 2?

Just checking on Parkers, and I didn't realise that the Clio Insurance groupings were so high...

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Summary.aspx?model=742&page=4

I based the search on cars from 01-08, and the lowest gorup is 7!!

I had two Dynamiques (1.5 DCi 80's), and it turns out they were group 9!

Looks like the Clio's may not be an option then, if the insurance grouping is so important.
