In my old place I was with Virgin Media, but in my new place I cant get the fibre optic internet or tv, however they can offer me the national broadband, but they are quoting me £30 a month just for phone line and internet, I was only paying £35 a month for internet, phone and L tv before, so now i'm going to get Sky tv, but it makes sense to get the phone and internet with them, when I check my postcode on their website it estimates I will get 0.5mb!!!! Virgin, Plusnet, TalkTalk and BT have all said I can get speeds of between 6mb and 8mb, but they are all £30 a month just for phone and internet (unlimited), sky is £20 a month (1st 3 months, then £30 after that) for Sky HD, phone and internet. Are these speed checkers accurate? because 0.5mb I wouldn't even be able to use Xbox Live and download speeds would be horrible!
Any help appreciated!

Put your phone number in here;
http://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Community/Broadband_Community/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html#
This is the most accurate system which all the ISP's base theres on.
You should see something like this(that's for my line);Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 8Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 7Mbps and 8Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 32.7Mbps and upstream line speed of 7Mbps.
The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.
The one in bold is what I'm getting off O2.0 -

Thank you for your interest.
Please note that postcode and address check results are indicative only. Most accurate results can be obtained from a telephone number check.
this is what mine says, does this mean I should get above 0.5mb? bearing in mind I could only put the postcode in as I dont have a phone number yet, there is a line installed but not active.Disneyland Paris (Dream Castle) - January 2010

Yup,you should be getting over 2Mb depending on what's in your exchange.Go to https://www.samknows.com 'Click on 'UK Broadband Availability' on the left,then on 'Broadband Checker' enter your phone &/or postcode & that will tell you who's LLU'd in your exchange.0

Thanks, just did a check on there with postcode and it says, Sky Broadband/Easynet LLU is available in my area so I take it that means its in my exchange? so hopefully I should get at least 2mb which is fine with me.Disneyland Paris (Dream Castle) - January 2010

If your exchange is unbundled then I would go for Plusnet or O2 if they operate there, but it depends what your usage is , Plusnet offer about 7-10 pounds /mth for bb at 10Gb cap, plus about 12 / mth for phone. I probably would not go with TalkTalk, although they have a rep who drops in from time to time to try and help with problems

Yep,Easynet is basically Sky & is currently being phased out with customers migrating to Sky.0
