  • on the router itself is there the relevant light on, to indicate the router itself has an internet connection?

Do you have other computers connected to the same router and successfully accessing the internet?

Can you connect to the router by using an ethernet cable (at least one should have come with the router) if so can you access internet ok when on the cable (take the netgear wireless adapter out while you are testing this)?

Go into control panel, internet options, go to the connections tab and then the lan settings button, where it says "use a proxy..." is that box ticked? If so untick it (all four checkboxes in the lan settings section should be unticked) and try again please.

    What OS?

If you're running Norton 2005, you might as well not have any security on it whatsoever. Malware has been able to disable Norton 2005 for years.

Yup - don't forget that your PC might be able to connect to the Router OK, but the router itself has to be able to connect to the internet itself, then send that information it recieves through to the PC.
can you log into your router setup and see if it is getting an IP address from the internet. (not 192,168,0,1 or something very similar which would be your routers default gateway address)
