Sony Vaio Laptop - No sound through speakers

Hi,

I have a sony vaio VPCEB3J0E laptop which is about 3 weeks old. Since using some headphones with the laptop I can't get any sound from the speakers.

I have tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing, have done a system restore and have checked that none of the settings are set as mute.

From a quick look online it seems that it is something to do with the headphone socket. Is there any fix for this or will I have to send it back to where I purchased the laptop from?

Thanks
Sarah

  • so you still get sound with headphones?

i read it could be the internal 'switch' for the socket, try playing some music and slowly 'wiggle' the headphones out
  • Headphones are working fine, have tried wiggling the headphone jack but nothing :(
  • have you looked in the bios to see if there any sound options there?

you say drivers are up to date, where did you download drivers from?
  • downloaded the drivers from the sony site and checked the device manager which can detect no issues.
  • and the bios has no sound options at all?
  • Not sure how to check the bios????
  • when you start the laptop it usually comes up with an image (possibly a sony image in your instance) where you can press either f2 or delete button to go into the motherboard bios.
it will look something like this, if you do have a look dont save changes unless you are certain you want to.
Its unlikely there are sound options there but if you are on the brink of returning it then its worth a try.

  • I tried the bios but nothing for sound on there, thanks for trying to help with it.

I have spoken to dixons and they have said that I can exchange it tomorrow as I am still within the 28 days, as there are no dixons stores they told me to take it back to currys or pcworld - probably need to be a whole new thread for that problem!
  • ah thats a shame, hopefully it will be straightforward to get it replaced at curry/pc world
Also dont know if you tried it but maybe try soudn drivers from elsewhere depending on the chipset, e.g if its creative soundcard get the drivers from their site instead.
  • On the bottoom right hand side of the task bar there is a loudspeaker that is the volume control, on my Viao you can switch between bluetooth/headphones/loudspeaker on there (there should be a little picture at the top).
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
