Portfolio management software recommendations

Can anyone recommend a free or cheap portfolio management software? I use Hargreaves Lansdown to buy and sell funds/shares which gives a good overview but not the detail I want.

The main problem with H & L is if I buy a stock several times over a period of time their platform lumps all the transactions together and just gives me an overview of the total cost and the current value. I would like to know the dates I purchased and at what price so I can see how well/bad my investments have done over time.

I am happy to enter the details of each trade and the stock price at a given date so not necessarily looking for the software to get the valuations for me.

I was just about to knock up a spreadsheet to do this myself but then thought there maybe a quick alternative already out there.

Thanks.

I mostly use spreadsheets, which means I can tweak them (e.g. extra details) as needed.

Also, the FT has a fairly simple portfolio tracker - online and with regular email reports (subscription required - I have one for the weekend paper and web access). I'm sure several other sites offer similar facilities.

Microsoft Money has this feature, sadly it is being discontinued and updates will stop at the end of the month. I'm looking at Gnu Cash as an alternative but it doesn't do all I want so the other option I'm working on is developing my own solution.

Once done I will post here if anyone wants to have a look.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • I created my own spreadsheet to do this. It took me a while, but it does everything that I want it to do. Another advantage is that I know what the spreadsheet is doing and why it is doing it. Best wishes, david

I use Trustnet and can amend/increase figures in columns whenever I wish. Also, although it does not cost anything the staff are very helpful. If there is any kind of problem e.g. the site not working as normal, they respond quickly. Another plus point is that I can list anything - i.e. everything I own.

  • What would be really good would to have everything accountable, so current account balance and then reoccuring bills, savings and of course mortgage. One thing private investors tend to get wrong is the cashflow but most portfolios dont really handle cash positive and negatives that well
