travel expenses help

my son is a student at Glasgow Uni he only gets his fees paid because his dad and I work. does anyone know if he would be entitled to travel expenses he still stays at home. Is there a cut off point in the parent's income before they will consider his application.

TIA

    SAAS travel expenses page

Travel expenses are income-assessed, the amount we will pay depends on your, your parents' or husband's, wife's, civil partner's or partner's income. You do not have to take out a student loan to be entitled to travel expenses. When we assessed your main support we told you how much your parents or husband, wife, civil partner or partner would have to contribute. We set this contribution against any loan, bursary or grants you are entitled to, including travel. If you did not give us income details on your main support application form, and you want help with your travel costs, we will need your parents or husband, wife, civil partner or partner to give us their income.

Thanks for that I looked at that page earlier but it doesn't give you any figures. I just wondered if anyone knew if there was a set amount of income before he would get any expenses.

If he doesn't get any maintenance loan help (due to parental income being too high) then he won't get any travel expenses, as far as I am aware.
  • When you say he gets his fees, do you mean he just gets tuition fees and no maintenance loan? I'm not sure if the rules have changed or apply differently in Scotland, but when I went to uni the students who lived at home could get a maintenance loan of around £1,200 before being means-tested.

Thanks for your replies. I phoned SAAS on Friday they weren't able to give me any info with regard to our income and claiming expenses said they would send out an application form. My son gets his tuition fees paid but no loan trying to get him through without taking the loan.

I'll just get him to send form away when it comes in, he probably won't get anything but it's worth a try, £26 a week for travel so anything back would be a bonus.

    thanks again for your help.
