can anyone help/advise me ?

hi guys - im a newbie so sorry in advance if Ive posted this in the wrong place!!
Ok so down to my question....At the moment im a single mum of 2 and I work 16 hours p/week and recieve tax credits....
Im thinking of taking on another job that would be 10 hours p/wk - If I do, I will then be working 10 hours one week and (my original 16 hours plus the 10 extra hours in 2nd job) 26 the next week.
Can anyone advise as I will be working 10 hours one week and 26 the next am I still entitled to Tax credits?
This will be 2 jobs with 2 different employers (If it makes any difference):o

Just curious as unsure what to do - thanks in advance for any advice......:T

Providing you meet the income rules (cut off is around £18k) you'll still be entitled.

  • Op , have a read at this link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/start/claiming/income-hours/work-out-hours.htm

It explains that as you are responsible for young children , the minimum amount of hours you need to work per week is 16 - which you will be doing.
The loopy one has gone :j
  • Sorry OP , i think i may have mis-read your post.

i thought you were asking if you could still receive your tax credits if you were only working 16 hours per week.

I will leave the link incase it helps anyone else though.

My understanding (which I accept may be totally wrong) is that you have to average 16 hours per week. How much you earn doesn't come into it. We had a question the other week from a high earner pointing out that her less than 16 hours per week wages would be more than someone doing 16 for min pay and she got told it didn't matter, it is the 16 hours that is relevant not the wages.

I'm not totaly sure I understand though, if you already have a 16 hours per week job, why are you only going to be doing that every other week?

if you work irregular weekly hours, you can average themn out on a monthly basis.
    16 x 4 + 64
    10 + 26 + 10 + 26 = 72
    no problem!

Sorry is this a typo? If you mean you will be doing 16 hours 1 week and the following 16 plus 10 hours in the extra job you will be fine. If you mean 1 week you will work 10 hours (just 10 hour job) and the other 26 (10 + 16) then I think my answer above stands.

I just re-read, it was my maths I was averaging her at 13 hours per week, dividing 26 by 2, instead of adding 26 + 10 and dividing by 2, which averages her at 18 which is above the min of 16 needed.

in my defence I was cooking at the time. :p
  • awww thanks all for the advice!! - Yes Im cutting my hours spendless as at the moment Im working 16 hrs p/week on the weekends - which means I hardly spend any quality time with the children - my mum looks after them - I want to make this change and take a job in the week (2 hrs p day Mon to Fri) in order that I can work my 16 hours job every other week - so yes just to re-clarify I will be doing one week of 10 hours and one week of 26 hours (10 hour job plus the 16 hour job).....Thank you all so much for your advice - its been a godsend as was in a bit of a quanrdy as to what to do - as I cant find a job in the week whereby I can take the children back and forth to school - so this is the only alternative but didnt want to comprimise the household budget.....Thanks again
