You can't mot it without insurance. (Well you can, but you can't drive it there)
*you* can't drive it there, but your friend, brother, mum, dad or mechanic can drive it there as long as they are a policy holder with driving other cars on their policy, which does not stipulate the other car to be insured.0 -
If there is no rush in all of this, I would
- get the MOT done,
- Look for the V5 (it has been registered in brother's name I take it?)
- If you can't find the V5 apply for a replacement V5, this will be quicker than you applying for a V5 in your name. It costs the same £25 but the advantage is it will be quicker, usually arrives in less than a week and won't land your brother with a fine. Your brother can apply for a new V5 using form V62 or if he has debit/credit card he can do it over the phone to DVLA, tell him to say the address is the same, i.e. not the university address, this should help to keep things simple and swift.
- Don't insure it until you have the original V5 or replacement V5 in your hands, and then insure it to start 7 days later (to allow your documents to arrrive) There's no point wasting money on insurance. Sod's law will dictate that if you insure it before you have the V5 the DVLA will drag their heels. Not to mention of course it is much cheaper to insure a car that is registered to you than one which is registered to someone else. So theoretically you could insure it whilst it is registered in his name and whilst you are waiting for the V5 but it will cost you more and you will have an admin charge to pay the insurance when you get the V5 into your name.
Also there's no point taxing it 5 days in advance online, because- It might only apply to actual renewals not to SORN cars or cars that have recently transferred ownership
- It can only be done online if your MOT is on the computer database AND your Insurance is on the database, both of which could take a few days to get on there.
- Lastly and most importantly, There would be no point, If you have the MOT cert, and the V5 slip and the insurance Docs, Just go to the PO get a disc and you will have it in your hands.

It's already at the garage. My mechanic came up here last week and drove it down there.
I'm gonna give him a call tomorrow and ask him to check if the log book is in there. IF it isn't then I have that form that another poster has given me the link to.
I can tax it, insure it etc... I checked on the website, I can drive it for the last 5 working days of the month having bought the tax online but not displaying it. It's not an offence so long as I have a cover note in my car to explain.[/QUOTE]
sorry but the above is wrong unless you have a current tax disc, see below from the direct.gov website.
If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

Actually the Direct gov advice is wrong, and the advice is contradictory which proves it is wrong.
The legislation which gives 5 grace days says nothing about a need to still display the expired tax disc, logically if you think about it there would be no point as it is invalid, but the main point is that the legislation does not require this to be done.
The advice is contraditory because it says it can be done for SORN cars, SORN cars would have a tax disc about a year old and might have no disc at all because when you SORN a current taxed car you HAVE to return the current tax disc.
I personally think the online process would not apply to a new keeper anyway.0 -
but the point im making is that the op cant drive the car with no tax for the last 5 days of the month and then tax it for the next month.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
