Can I return something without the receipt?

Hi Guys,
I received a watch for christmas which is very ugly and does not suit me one bit.
It came from ernest jones as that was the bag it was wrapped up in. I do not have a receipt and don't know which store it came from. Would it still be possible to return it for a store credit or at best a refund?
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Probably not as even with a receipt there is no right to a refund . You could try in a local Ernest Jones shop, but I wouldn't hold your breath.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Check this out, although it's really for online orders, it does go into detail about returning gifts:

If it was purchased before christmas by now it will probably be out of any "change of mind" or other goodwill policies, doubt they will refund this item, also if there has been a sale since then with no proof of purchase the chances of getting a full refund for the price paid are slim.0

You have no rights at all as it was a gift, only the original purchaser would have any sort of chance, they would need some form of proof of purchase, but as already mentioned, probably out of any store returns or goodwill gesture period by now.

The problem is though that there is a 'right' to return if you buy online, but not if bought in a shop. In either scenario it would be the person who originally bought the item that has the return rights, not the gift recipient.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. This sounds like a good starting point.
I'd only add that outside of your Consumer Rights in any situation, even if you're not legally entitled to it, it's always worth a try at least as some stores will refund or issue store credit as a goodwill gesture to their customer. An example (not quite in the same league I'll grant you ) was an extension lead I recently returned to Wilkinsons store. The truth was I couldn't find the ones I was sure I already owned so purchased a new one for the home. Shortly after I found my old leads stored in a 'safe place' (always the way, isn't it?!) and although I had lost my Wilkinsons receipt for the new one, I did still have the original packaging plus the lead was in good condition etc. so I thought hell, it's worth a try. The next time I was shopping at Wilkos I took the lead back in its box, explained that it wasn't suitable but that there was nothing physically wrong with it. So far so good, the lady kindly agreed to refund anyway. Then she asked for the receipt which I explained unfortunately I couldn't find at home thinking here we go, that'll be it now as I knew I wasn't entitled to anything for just having changed my mind but the lovely lady said she would still refund the item but that she would have to issue it on a gift card instead of cash. RESULT!
It just goes to show... you don't ask you don't get (sometimes you don't get either but) what's the worst they can say...No?0
