I have received 3 different spam emails to 3 different email addresses.
Each 'invite' me to click on a link and appear to be from a friend.
This happened last month and friend stopped using that email address. today's spam came from the old email address.
I also think other friends of hers received spam.
so is it possible to tell if -
Is it coming from my machine ?
my friends machine ?
friend of the friend ?
I have run all the usual scans and my pc appears clean.

Did your friend just stop using it, or actually delete the account. If it's a Hotmail account, then most likely the password has been compromised, and should be changed. Just not using it won't stop someone else. This happened last month and friend stopped using that email address. spam. today's spam came from the old email address.
The only way to be sure where the emails actually came from is to analyse the headers.0 -

Just stopped using it I think, I'll get her to change password

re header- what should I look for, would it help if I posted it here ?0 -
Forged 'from' addresses in email are extremely common. Your emails came directly from a spammer, there is nothing wrong with your computer or your friends,. Just delete them, like you should do with all spam.
And if it is from a Hotmail account, then tell your friend to change his/her Hotmail password immediately, as the spammer has worked out the password and sent mail from there via webmail. This too is very common.0
