    Your grandfather created a trust when he gave you the £20,000. The remaining £10,000 is part of his estate for probate purposes, you should have entered it in box 14.2 on IHT205. However, you don't need to tell HMRC or provide an audit trail unless it makes his estate liable for inheritance tax if it wasn't before.

    There's no reason to going to all the effort to provide an audit trail to your brother or the beneficiaries unless they disbelieve your story to the extent that they might sue you...if you haven't done anything wrong you've got nothing to fear.
