New bathroom any thoughts on my idea

If you can at all fit it in, then I would consider having a bath with a shower over. The sort of house you describe with the bathroom presumably downstairs at the moment (?), is probably the older small terraced type - am I right? If so, then this type of house is usually bought by either young families or couples starting a family. In either case they will want a bath to bathe kiddies, and so the only bathroom having only a shower will seriously put them off.

If you are planning to stay where you are for the long term then ignore the above and just do what suits you!:D

Oh, and by the way, why not get an enclosure with sliding door(s), no problem with drips then.

Best thing I bought recently (I have such a sad life) was a

Wipe door and panel down before stepping out.
The glass is clean and smear free...... sad!

We went with a Twyford Bathrooms Geo6 shower enclosure (900quadrant though). Cheaper budget range than the Hydr8 that Plumbers Shop Lee is recommending but we're happy with it. Very good value for 6mm thick glass and of good quality. Installed ourselves with no issues. For shower tray we used an MX-group low profile ABS-capped stone resin tray. Shower valve : Grohe Avensys Modern mixer shower with shower head on riser rail...wouldn't go with a fixed head as others have already said as it doesn't offer much flexibility in showering, can't use it to clean the tiles down and urmm can't wash the dog!

We wipe down the enclosure after every shower too...combination of squeegee like wallbash's (still works on a curved enclosure just horizontally instead!) and microfibre cloth.

Thanks for that hadn't thought about stone resin, would i be right about it being stronger and less chip resistant in case something gets dropped in the shower.

I've obviously got a bit confused about the shower unit itself. As the shower is being moved to room upstairs i want to ensure a constant supply of hot water, and i would prefer to have an electric power shower surface mounted for ease of replacement if it fails.

We live in a hard water area so yes we will probably need to wipe screen down after use.

Have you tried looking at the Roman shower enclosure range? They have several different types of doors; sliding, inward and outward opening.

When we did our bathroom out a couple of years ago I bought everything on ebay. I ended up with a shower cubicle with all the toys (monsoon shower, steam option, radio, side jets) for around £600 delivered - I'd seen the same thing at the Ideal Home Exhibition a month earlier for £4k!!! It was new, and has been brilliant, it goes in a corner and has a curved front that closes with sliding curved glass doors.

Are you talking about having a shower which is fully electric ie does not use hot water from the boiler, but heats it up in the shower unit itself?

These can be pretty pricey to install - the last one I quoted for was over £500 excluding the shower because a number of other electrical items had to be resolved at the same time as the general house electrics weren't up to date

  • I often use Ebay but until i actually get the keys i haven't got anywhere to store anything.
Yes def power shower type thing. One we got in crrent house cost us £89 and £50 for fitting.

The stuff that Plumbers Shop Lee suggested looks about right for a pretty good price.

Are the resin shower trays more resiliant than the B&Q plastic type ones?

searched around for ages and found that plumb centre gave us a very good price, excellent advice and we didnt have the hassel of internet/delivery/return etc for the big items.
  • Spend as much as you can on the flooring. Cheap non slip lino is a &*(* to clean, looks horrible and is still slippery as anything.

  • Strange i was thinking the opposite, that tiles would be slippery and we could buy non-slip lino!
Also would be easier to change and update.
