Gas prepayment meter question

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew much about prepayment meters? I moved back home to my mums last year and didnt know she was having serious problems with paying some bills! (had she told me i would have tried to helped her sort things out back then) Just before christmas 3 unplesant men turned up and installed a prepayment meter for our gas. The meter is set to take £14.50 per week to repay her debt (before we even get any gas) which is more than we can afford, shes tried calling them to tell them this and has been told to put it in writing. Weve now had 2 weeks without any heating because we cant afford it and im worried that when we do scrape some money together for heat it will just be eaten in repayments. I had a thought earlier and seen as it is too late to call an energy company i wondered if anyone here might know the answer.

I am wondering if there is anyway my mum could stop her account, or rather stop getting gas from the energy company and organise a repayment plan with them and then would i be able to open an account in my name that i pay for most likely with a different energy supplier? i hope that makes sense. I think i can do one monthly payment you see, but i dont have weekly cash to hand. again if that makes sense.

thank you in advance, i really appreciate any thoughts anyone might have

Send a copy of her benefits in, they should reduce it to about £3:30 . She could try chaning suppliers, although some do block for debt.

If there are now 2 of you living in the property put your income together and work out what you can pay for the repayments. How big is the debt? Check screen 27 for this info.

If you do what you are suggesting it is fraud.

The meter may go into time based debt recovery so the longer you leave it the more will have to be paid back weekly.
