This is the best advice:) I only wash my hair every ten days now but I've had to build up to that, its never greasy and it never looks dirty or smells and its in the best condition its ever been, I was only able to stretch it this long because I changed to a volumising shampoo and conditioner so no dreaded dimethicone (sp?) which is what weighs heavily on hair making it look and become greasy very quickly, I'm aiming for every two weeks now;)

Hi thanks for this, don't know if I could leave my hair that long between washes. I washed mine last night and by the time I got up this morning it was greaseville. The conditioner I use now is the one that comes with the hair colour I use, I can make it stretch until I buy another colour but I only use it on the ends. I use Simple shampoo due to my irritated scalp. Which volumising shampoo and conditoner do you use, I didn't realise this would have no silicones in?

I'm not sure if they have no silicone in them but not the dreaded dimethicone, my hair used to get greasy hours after washing or conditioning with a product with that in it, this included the little tube of conditioner that came with either my nice n easy colour or the John Frieda, I use Tigi Superstar shampoo and conditioner and alternate with Morrison's own Brand that looks very similar to herbal essences, a huge difference in price but both great products. It took me about 2/3 months gradually stretching between washes to get to where I am now, dry shampoo helped but is rarely needed now, I have quite sensitive skin and scalp too I have tried simple products but probably had the worst reaction I've ever had to anything with them, admittedly it was the skincare but I'm too scared now to try the haircare or anything else of theirs:)

  • Hi Glowgirl, thanks for this. I am often tempted by shampoos and conditioners such as Herbal Essences and the Tigi Superstar but they seem heavily perfumed so I have always been put off them because of my sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin and have had no reaction it may be worth giving them a try. I know Herbal Essences do a volumising combo. Do you use any styling products too?
  • 3 of my best tips for this, after years of trying to figure out how to fix the same thing:

    1. only wash it every 2 or 3 days. when i washed it every day, i found immediate relief but in the long run made things worse. speaking to family/etc since then confirms i'm not alone in that

    2. do not put conditioner onto the roots - someone already mentioned this at the top of the thread, but i did it for years without realising what a huge difference it makes. makes it slightly harder to brush when dry, but it's worth it IMO.

    3. use cheap conditioner. that one sounds odd, but honestly, i used to spend a LOT on expensive conditioner, none of it worked better than the cheap stuff, and i found the runniness of the cheaper stuff actually ends up making it easier to distribute through the hair but not in "clumps" or blobs. i only buy the supermarket branded conditioner now becuase of that. i do have a branded conditioner that i rather like the smell of, but i water it down before i use it (split it into an old bottle, so 1 part water to 1 part normal conditioner), for that reason.

Your welcome:) I dont use any styling products now as my hair is in such good condition but I do have thickish curly/wavy hair so it does its own thing however I do wear clip in extensions to add length every day, herbal essences are lovely and dd who has very long dyed straight fine hair but a lot of it uses the Aussie ones which I wasnt keen on, Treseme did the volumising job but made my hair greasy:( I'd be hard pushed to choose between the Tigi and the Morrisons, if I were you I'd go for the Morrisons one first (under £1) and if you dont react you'll could well be ok with the Tigi if you feel like splashing out:)

I had a terrible itchy/irritated scalp & greasy hair I started using a shampoo with Ketoconazole in it, Nizoral is one & I think boots do their own brand one cheaper, I'm currently using a Galpharm one that was on offer in Aldi a few weeks ago, but you may find some still instore.
Anyway the point is my scalp has really calmed down, stopped being itchy & is lot's less greasy, Can't believe I could get through a 3rd day without my hair looking grotty. I've just conditioned the ends with my usual stuff, so worth giving it a try to see if it helps.

Thanks for this, do conditioners for greasy hair work? I know Head and Shoulders do one for greasy hair as do Boots I think.
  • In all the ones I've tried, Citygirl, i can't say they were that much different. i recall that most of them that I've tried are thicker/make the hair less silky - as if you're comparing conditioners that have the silicone in vs. ones without - it seems to be that level of difference again. So frankly not much cop, they just seem to work by making your hair less coated in conditioner. Which is what i'm doing when i buy my el-cheap-o non-brand stuff or the watered down brand stuff i use.

  • This is really random but i just read a blog today about washing your hair less to eventually reduce the greasey-ness, so that might be worth a read for you? it's at www.bjgofficial.com - you don't need to leave it ten days but maybe only need to wash it every other day eventually.

I really need to wash my hair every day or it looks like I could supply a chip shop for a month, now that I am not working (boohoo) I wash it every other day but I do hate the other day..lol
I think I have gone through about every product known to man and then some and have found Wen works wonders. It is expensive but it is a one stop product and it does seem to last forever. Should add though that I don't buy this anymore due to not working but when I was working and going out and meeting people etc I could not stand that flat and greasy look 5 minutes after leaving the house.

Saying that though I do also rate head and shoulders for coloured hair.

Johnsons baby do a conditioner now and that is really light too and smells lovely
