Engery Smart

I am thinking of switching to Energy Smart with British Gas to help with my budgeting (i'm stuck with them as its in my rental contract I cannot change).

Can anyone please explain how this works, I have asked British Gas but in THREE emails they have not answered the question I asked.

I currently pay by direct debit monthly. £42 for gas and £29 for electric, after taking meter readings today and based on my previous bill I expect to still be credit by around £80 for gas but in debit by about £20 for electric. I would like to know if they will continue to take these monthly payments each month or take just what I have used?? and what happens to the credit / debit balances I had before Energy Smart commenced.

Hope this makes sense, i'm new to all this. Thanks in advance.

the credit will get eroded by the forthcoming bills, you send in a reading every month and a bill is produced, if you don't get a reading in, then an estimate is produced, the idea is you pay for what you use and perhaps make ammends to reduce the bills if need be.

With Energy smart you can choose to pay the exact bill monthly or set up a fixed Direct debit which would be assessed 6 monthly to break even at the 12 month stage. This is not a tariff though so you can still choose to have either the standard tariff or an online one such as the online saver.

I would also say that you should be able to change suppliers even if it is in your tenancy agreement.

I pay BG a fixed about each month regardless of bill. I assume if I owe or have too much credit the payments will go up/down

I believe on 13th month you get £30 credit for each fuel as said it inst a tariff its a method of billing

I'm with BG and my Click Energy 6 tariff comes to an end in May so I have to find a new tariff too. I can't apply for the websaver tariffs as I don't want to pay them by DD. Boo! Hiss! So I guess I'll just go on to their Standard tariff (apparently their "most popular" tariff).

I find it very confusing choosing a tariff. I think I should come off Economy 7 too as I don't make as much use of the overnight cheaper electric as I could. I guess if I go on the standard tariff and come off E7 my bills should probably remain the same.

    Clueless!

If you look here there are other tariffs that you can pay by Debit card or Direct debithttp://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/energy/our-tariffs/energysmart/products.html

If you want the benefits of an online tariff but don't want to go on an online tariff i'd go for Energy Smart (with OnlineSaver 3), it's 4% less than the standard tariff and you don't need to be on direct debit!
