Degree

Good Evening Ladies and Gents,

Was wondering if anyone could offer me a bit of advice. I am currently looking into the possibility of going university on a part time basis (less than 12 hours a week) direct into final year of degree as i did a HND a few years ago whilst i am continue to be on jsa . I have been offered a place at a uni starting in 2 weeks time but have realised that it will take 2 years to complete the final year on a part time basis. The question i have is currently my mortgage payment is being met by my mortgage insurance company due to redundancy a few months ago and I am looking for full time employment (2 interviews so far since being made redundant from IT support job) but is there anyway I can go full time to complete the degree by this time next year without losing my house.

Just in case you are wondering I am wanting to do the degree as it has become essential requirement for all IT related jobs this is despite me having 4 years of experience and being from a ethnic minority I need all the help I can get just to land another job.

Sorry dont understand that point, are you saying it is harder for people from the ethnic minorities to get jobs in the IT sector?

To complete in a year you will need to study full time and end your JSA claim.

I only feel like this because after being asked at interviews about my ethnic background and race despite being born and brought up in England and surprise surprise I dont get the job it says something.

I want the best possible chance of securing a suitable role as having 4 years of IT experience as well as IT professional qualifications still does not help me. Most of the IT jobs want a degree as well as experience so I am finding it quite difficult plus with me being from a ethnic minority this will make things even harder in this competitive market.

Feeling sorry for yourself because you aren't 'white' isn't going to help matters.

You probably could go uni and still sign on, but it's illegal and if they find out they might prosecute?

I would sympathize with you if you had numerous interviews with 1 employer, and kept getting rejected, but seeing as it is different employers, they all cant be racist surely?

It's harder full-stop. All the research indicates that ethic minorities struggle to get employment in all areas due to racism and other social-political issues. For example, one of the simple tests that has been done is to send in identical CVs but one with an ethic sounding name and another with an English sounding name - the English one is disproportionally selected over the one with an ethic or foreign sounding name.

Having had interviews with 2 different companies and being questioned regarding my background has led me to beleive that discrimination is now commonplace in recruitment and selection process. Prior to the redundancy it was not as difficult to find suitable employment however after 80 job applications since November and only 2 interviews I am starting to feel aggrieved.

They need to check the background of all applicants to ensure they are permitted to work in the UK.

  • Are you a member of BNP? or EDL?

When somebody from ethnic minority speaks with a british accent, on CV it also states that they have been educated in the UK and also worked for other companies why would they then ask these questions apart from intimidation?

I know that discrimination exists, I'm from an ethnic minority background myself, although I was born here.

I work in HR and to avoid racial discrmination, we have to treat everybody the same, but still need to check eligibility to work in the UK. Therefore, I ask everybody the same questions as it isn't always obvious.

I employ people with British accents who have been educated in the UK and have worked for other employers but have limited leave to remain. One of the people I'm thinking of has been studying in the UK for about 6 years so is on a student visa and has no trace of an accent - all work experience and qualifications has been gained in the UK.

Anyway, good luck on your job search and I'm sure the perfect job is out there for you.
