I wish I done a little more homework on UK2 Abroad, I'd have seen these comments and saved myself the agro. Whats annoying is the recommendation came from a MSE forum too. The SIM arrived late, just about had time to set up the account before flying to the US, when I arrived it didn't work, nor did it on a friends phone, had a couple of half hearted replies to e-mails from them trying to 'sort' the problem when I was in the states; but since returning in April and sending the SIM back via registered post the next day I have heard nothing from them. Not replying to e-mails and no contact number at all. I can only assume they are a bogus company. Very annoyed!!

Should still check a company out even if its recomended on here.

If your going to the US then you are better off getting a free PAYG Three SIM and topping that up. Then you can call the UK for 3p a min or 2p for a Text and its free to receive calls. Data is only 1p a MB as well.
  • Just to relate my own experience with UK2Abroad:

In June 2015 I bought a UK2Abroad “US Calls and Data Plan” for my daughter who was to visit the US, and told them her departure date. We heard nothing after that, so I emailed 5 days before departure and again 2 days before, but still no reply. So on arrival in the US she bought a standard US sim card from T-Mobile.

Three days AFTER arrival she received an email from UK2Abroad Support saying our email address must have been “junked” and offering to piggyback the UK2Abroad plan on the T-Mobile sim card. We accepted, but again heard nothing.

At the end of October I emailed and asked for a full refund, and gave them 2 weeks till I would file a claim in Reading County Court (the website whois.stsoftware revealed the company’s domain-name owner and address, so I sent him a copy too). One day before my deadline, they refunded the purchase price into my account.

Moral of the story: don’t waste your time with UK2Abroad, just get a US sim on arrival. There are T-Mobile and other outlets everywhere. The standard sim card is USA-only but there are also international options, or you can just use a free online texting option like WhatsApp.

Perhaps a 3 SIM would have been a better option for your daughter, then she could have used Feel At Home.

Other than that, using a local SIM is usually the cheapest option. I stay in contact with people using messaging apps when I'm abroad. They use little data. Free WiFi is usually not difficult to find too.
