Hard drive repair

Hi

I have 2 hard drives that have crashed (1 I think is a physical issue and the other is just a formatted harddrive) and I cannot get the data off.
Can anybody recommend a company that can give me the data back? either on a DVD or back on the harddrive

cheers

Kevin

I think Disk Labs were the company I considered using (quite a few years back now). I didn't need them in the end.

I'm not sure of the fees, but I suspect it will be around £500 to £1000 minimum for a complete hard drive recovery, so you might want to try to recover the formatted drive yourself before sending it away... Maybe worth looking at TestDisk, VirtualLab or PC Inspector. I haven't used any of these tools myself, though.

    For the physical fault:
Retrodata is one I use. Typically about £500 for 20GB. They'll have a look at it first and give you a list of whats recoverable before going ahead.

    For the formatted drive:
As long as no other data has been written to it you should be able to get it all back. If its been written to, how much you get back is hit and miss. Testdisk from CGSecurity is good for this problem and it was free last time I looked.

  • Recuva, for the formatted drive, and Unstoppable Copier, for the physically damaged one, are worth a try. Obviously don't install anything on the drives as the data must remain unchanged as much as possible for optimum recovery.

Dataquest is the company we use at work if we are unable to recover data ourselves - http://www.dq-int.co.uk/ If you choose the economy or standard service you will get a free initial diagnosis - pricing is listed on the website. The turnaround time on the economy service can be slow but is the cheapest. The data, if recoverable, can be returned on DVDs or a 2.5" external hard drive (cost is ca. £75) as appropriate for the amount recovered.
